Turmeric – Orange
Organically grown on our farm near Biggenden, we grow the way nature intended – naturally. We do not use chemicals. We hand weed and when we feed our plants, we use only compost, chemical free composted cow manure & organic composted chicken manure. The rain water we use to water our plants is saved in a large fish filled dam on our property & this means extra natural fertiliser thanks to the fish.
We grow in long raised beds & hand harvest our turmeric. We trim the roots, & dry the ‘hands’ of turmeric for a couple of weeks. We then brush any dried residue dirt off & pack in paper bags. We don’t add time, & therefore dollars, to the product by washing it. Just rinse when you use it & there’s no need to peel the turmeric either.
Orange turmeric as a raw food tastes a little like an unripe carrot. Use grated/sliced/chopped in soups, casseroles, curries, pasta sauces, fish dishes & stir fries – it adds a lovely depth of flavour to a lot of dishes. Play with the amounts to suit your taste buds.
It is known to be an anti-inflammatory & contains anti-oxidant properties. These properties are said to be enhanced if eaten with black pepper.
It will store well in your pantry/cupboard in the paper bag. But…come October, it will be trying to shoot & grow. So, I’ve found the best way to have your turmeric for longer is to spend some time grating it all and freezing it in thin layers between baking paper in a container. A thin layer enables you to easily break off what you need & pop the rest back in the freezer. It keeps it better this way than as whole pieces, which tend to defrost soft.
Sold in 1/2 kg bags for $9.00 each. The photos show how much you get in this size bag – if you think it’s too much, split the cost & amount with family & friends!
We also grow the white turmeric too – see separate listing.
After about September/October (depending on the weather) we will also have our organically grown garlic for sale.
